2 Day High Voltage Safety
The High Voltage Safety Course is designed for anyone who works on or near high voltage and helps identify potential dangers. Whether you are a seasoned tradesperson or just starting to familiarize with high voltage this course will open eyes and make you more aware of surroundings.
The class begins with an introduction and a list is compiled of the safety topics the participants want to talk about (grounding, switching, hazards, etc). This list gives the instructor a road map of where to allow more time for discussion and ensure the participants understand the topic.
This leads into accidents and what happens to the human body when a person receives an electrical shock and the energies created by an arc flash. The remainder of the first day is Arc Flash and Canadian Standard Z462. We discuss how arc flash is created and how we work safely and protect ourselves from these hazards. The participants are guided through the Z462 manual so they can understand and find at a later date any topic they require.
The second day begins Hazard Identification, using workshops the class will identified hazards working with different electrical equipment such as Transformers, Switchgear, Cable, Emergency Equipment and discussing actual accidents that occurred on this equipment and perform calculation on short circuits currents to discuss how equipment is designed to these currents and how to protect yourself from these currents and ground gradients.
We then progress into Equipment Switching, there is discussion using a single line diagram and the participants will practice writing an operating order or switching procedure to isolate high voltage equipment. Proper method of switching equipment will be demonstrated.
Grounding is included in the program, participant will learn how to select and properly install temporary grounds for worker safety. They will learn how to size the grounds to the circuits they are working on. They will also observe what happens to safety grounds when they are pulsed with a fault current.
Discussion on Job Planning will follow and how different companies across Canada utilize job planning as a working tool to keep people safe, how accidents occur and how they may be prevented using job briefing before and during every job. The course is concluded by reviewing the list of safety topics compiled on the first day.
