Happy International Women’s Day!

International Women’s Day takes place on March 8, and provides an occasion to reflect on the progress we have made toward achieving fairness, equality and justice for women in Canada and across the globe. It is a time to be inspired by the change we have achieved together, and to renew our resolve to continue to work hard on the unfinished business.

Recently, OXFAM Canada released a Feminist Scorecard of the Canadian Government, giving green, yellow and red ratings on the actions, or lack thereof, that this government has taken to advance women’s rights and gender equality. Trudeau’s government received a green light on representation and leadership, for appointing Canada’s first gender-balanced cabinet and deciding to restore funding for women’s rights advocacy. On the issue of jobs and pay equity, OXFAM gave the Liberals a red light, after they campaigned on a promise of inclusive growth in our country, women continue to make less than their male counterparts.

The IBEW has an important role to play to ensure our Sisters and Brothers have equal opportunity to quality jobs, a safe and respectful workplace as well as benefits and a pension to retire in dignity. Last year, following the International Convention, we sent out a request for a response if Local Unions were in support of having a Canadian IBEW Women’s Conference. We have decided to move forward on having this Conference, please watch for future correspondence with information regarding where and when the Conference will be held.

Happy International Women’s Day!

In solidarity,

Bill Daniels
International Vice President
